R.I.P. Dixie

In 2005, the neighbors in the house next door moved out of their house. I didnt realize until about a week later that they had left someone behind. I heard a strange banging noise coming from outside. So I went out to see what was going on. Just as I stepped out the door, I looked up at the window of the house next door in time to see their dog Dixie running full speed and slamming her head into the window trying to break it to get out. Luckily it was plexi-glass and it only cracked and didnt hurt her at all.

They had moved out and left her behind, only to come by once a day to feed her and let her out. When they came by that day, I told them what I saw and offered to care for her as long as they provided her food and medical care until he moved to a place where he could take her back again. She was 11 years old and he had had her since she was a puppy (got her free from a yard sale she was the only cream colored puppy, the others were black). So you would think he would do anything to get her back. His bringing food and/or money for food for her lasted about 2 months, he wouldnt even go to the local Humane Society and explain the situation, they were really good about helping people out with dog food when they needed it. So I ended up having to do it myself.
Well about a month goes by and he hadnt even come to see her, then he shows up one day, no food, no money for food still, then another month goes by and he doesnt come around. Then he shows up one day with his son, they spend some time with her in the back yard, then when he leaves....I never see him again.
By this time I was in love with her and she had stolen my heart. He had told me that she hated cats and would kill them, so I was afraid to bring her in the house with my Diamond and Rio. But she was 11 years old and I couldnt stand seeing her out there when it was cold. At night I would bring her in and then take her back out in the daytime. Eventually, she became a complete inside dog because she was housebroken. And she was NO cat killer. Her and Diamond became fast, very close friends.
Dixie came to be part of my family Nov. 2, 2005 and went to Rainbow Bridge today March 3, 2010 at the age of 15 1/2. She was a wonderful dog and I will miss her more than words can say.
I remember the times we would play fetch in the back yard, she loved to chase a ball, and sometimes she would even want me to play fetch with her here in the house. About 3 years ago or so, a black and white cat showed up and never left, Dixie and Jinx (as I came to call him) would chase each other around an azalia bush in the back yard, it was so funny to watch. And of course the baths she would give to Diamond. I always knew when she had given him one, because he would come to me and his head would be soaked with Dixie drool.
She so loved to go for car rides. I would look at her and say wanna go for a ride? And she would get so excited. I would let her out the door and she would run straight to the car and sit by the back door until I opened it and in she would jump. Going to the park was something she always enjoyed.
She did have her little quirks that drove me up the wall though, like every time I would go into the kitchen to cook a meal, and needed to get to the fridge...guess who was in the way laying right in front of the door? Yep, Dixie was. And I would have to move her. She loved to lay right in your path, so you had to move her or step over or around her. Guess it was her way of saying here I am you will always know Im around.
There are so many other things I could say about her and remember about her. She will be so missed by not only me but everyone who knew her. Boomer has already looked for her. It is so quiet here in the house. All of the animals are just not acting like they usually do, not even the parakeets. Maybe one day we will all feel normal again.
Here is one of my favorite pictures of my Dixie girl. I love you and miss you girl.
