Lucky Squirrel

I went to the park today for a little bit to feed the ducks and hopefully take some pictures. We were standing under a dead hollowed out tree feeding the geese and there was this little squirrel that kept coming up for some bread. He was up in the top of that dead tree when he suddenly let out a blood curdling scream and we look up to see a red tail hawk land on the top of it.
I just knew that he had gotten that little squirrel, but when he took off he didnt have anything in his clutches. I had walked back from the tree to try and take a picture of the hawk but he took off before I could. Then I noticed a hole in the tree and peering out from that hole was the little squirrel, scared to death. He had survived to bug people for bread another day.
I was so happy that he made it, since I had just fed the little guy, it would have broke my heart to know he had gotten killed.

Last Saturday though, one of my mockingbirds that has always been here, didnt fare too well. My outside birds were on the feeder fighting with each other over who gets what perch, then suddenly they all let out this awful scream and took off. When I looked out, there was a huge red shouldered hawk in the middle of my yard with a mockingbird in his clutches. It was so saddening. I have stopped putting out food for the birds because I dont want to offer up a buffet for the hawk. Once he is gone (which I dont know if that will happen) I will put food out again.
